5 TECH INNOVATIONS CHANGING THE WAY MEDICAL LABS WORK

1. Volumetric Absorptive Microsampling (VAMS) technology for substance abuse monitoring
Alcala Labs is offering the Mitra microsampling device commercially to substance abuse centers. Using VAMS technology, the Mitra enables testing for opioids and alcohol with a simple prick of the finger on site. This replaces the need those with laboratory travel jobs to request urine samples and generates more accurate results by reducing the chance of specimen tampering.

2. Adhesive patch for testing blood glucose levels
Diabetics will no longer need to prick their fingers to find out their blood sugar levels. An adhesive patch, developed by a University of Bath research team, is able to use hair follicles to pull glucose from fluid between cells for testing. The patch is able to keep track of glucose levels throughout the day without the need for blood calibration.

3. New blood test increases accuracy for prostate cancer risk
A new blood test has been developed that paints a more accurate picture of prostate cancer risk in men. Instead of measuring PSA as standard tests do, the new IsoPSA test measures molecular changes within the PSA protein. This new technique can more accurately determine who suffers from high-risk disease and reduces false positives associated with traditional testing methods.

4. Advanced cervical HPV testing for early cervical cancer detection
A study published by the JAMA Network suggests traditional Pap smears are less effective at detecting early stages of cervical cancer than cervical HPV testing. Detection of the virus, which is the leading cause of cervical cancer, can better predict who will develop precancerous lesions.

5. Home screening kits for colon cancer help with early detection
Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in the U.S., but invasive colonoscopies often prevent people from taking the initiative to get screened. The Cologuard home screening kit helps with earlier detection and allows people to assess their risk from the comfort of their homes.
